Two states don't require liability auto insurance
I was reading the UnionLeader and found an article about possible mandatory auto insurance in New Hampshire. For one, I wasn't even aware that New Hampshire along with Wisconsin didn't require liability auto insurance.
However, if you do have an at-fault accident this could bring financial disaster. So it's best to get car insurance. Also, even though car insurance is not mandatory in NH, more people have car insurance in NH, than many other states. Most of the people in Manchester, NH think mandatory is a good idea, but it may be a tough sell, but I don't know why.
If you are in either states, see links below
Wisconsin's Financial Responsibility Law
New Hampshire Auto Insurance Guide
It seems that his issue has been raised 4-5 times and never passed. New Hampshire requires all policies have funding to pay victims of uninsured drivers. Also, If you finance a vehicle there, you are required have proof of insurance, which is reason why so many have insurance. The question is though, will they join the rest of us and have required mandatory auto insurance?
I can understand why most residents want mandatory auto insurance, and I agree. Since most people have auto insurance and feel it necessary to be responsible, they feel that everyone should be required to have auto insurance. Regardless if more people get auto insurance or not, with a mandate, should not be the concern.
If you are driving around with no insurance, that is not responsible. You should be required have insurance I think. I've debated the issue of mandatory health insurance, and while I feel that's not necessary, I think mandatory auto insurance is important. Having health insurance doesn't affect others, but it's different driving your car.

Call me stupid but I think that insurance should not be mandatory. In our state, it is mandatory to have insurance but it is NOT mandatory for the insurance companies to sell it to everyone.
If the insurance companies do not have a law saying they have to sell it, doesn't it seem strange that it's mandatory to BUY it??
I don't think that the government's job should be to dictate that we are required to insure our vehicles. I have no problem with private banks creating the requirement (as they have an interest in the vehicle); however, there is absolutely no reason for the government to force me to pay a third-party.
So in most of the country, regardless of the fact that I have a clean driving history, I'm supposed to pay an insurance company $X, where a good portion of "X" is simply based on nothing other than discriminatory factors (the driving habits of people of similar age, gender, and background). In nearly any other industry, such profiling is completely illegal. Despite this, these states would require me to have to pay this tax (which is really what it becomes when it's required by the state) strongly based upon my race, gender, and non-auto-related history... long story short, as far as I'm concerned, these states are condoning discrimination.
Why should the government require me to pay this prejudiced/profile-based tax to this third-party, especially when I've done absolutely nothing wrong? Simply because I might do something wrong? I don't think that's right at all.
Which is another reason I love living in NH.
Ficus, let's see what you will have to say then you wreck someones property or would have to pay medical bills for 50k out of your pocket. My bet you will think about why you didn't buy insurance in the first place
I think mandated insurance is a bad choice as well. I live in Wisconsin where nothing is required but I want to move to another state where insurance isn't mandated and am very disappointed to find out that we are 1 of 2 states that don't mandate. Why should I pay insurance when I know I will never be in a car accident that is my fault. I think it is a stupid rule and will never go to another state that has this policy. Since when has the government taken so much control, I thought this was a democracy. P.S. I do have motocycle insurance tho.
